How the Shoe Size Converter Works
A shoe size converter turns a size you already know, such as a US Men's 9 or a EU 42, into the matching size in another region. Because the US, UK and EU each scale their numbers differently, the same foot can be labelled three different ways, which makes buying shoes from international brands confusing.
The most reliable starting point is your foot length in centimetres. Every regional size maps back to a foot length, so once you measure your foot you can find your size in any system. EU sizes are based on the Paris point (about 6.67 mm per size), while US and UK sizes increase in roughly one-third-inch steps.
Keep in mind that shoe sizing is not standardised across brands. Athletic, dress and boot lasts differ in shape and volume, so the same numerical size can fit differently. Use the charts below as a dependable guide, then check each brand's own size advice.
International Shoe Size Charts
These charts cover the most common conversions. Find your foot length first, then read across to your size in each region.
Women's shoe sizes
| US | UK | EU | Foot length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 3 | 35-36 | 22.0 |
| 6 | 4 | 36-37 | 22.9 |
| 7 | 5 | 37-38 | 23.5 |
| 8 | 6 | 38-39 | 24.1 |
| 9 | 7 | 40 | 25.0 |
| 10 | 8 | 41 | 25.9 |
Men's shoe sizes
| US | UK | EU | Foot length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 40 | 25.0 |
| 8 | 7 | 41 | 25.9 |
| 9 | 8 | 42-43 | 26.7 |
| 10 | 9 | 43-44 | 27.5 |
| 11 | 10 | 44-45 | 28.3 |
| 12 | 11 | 46 | 29.2 |
A handy rule: for adults, US sizes are usually one number larger than UK sizes, and EU sizes are roughly the US men's size plus 33 (or the women's size plus 30 to 31).
How to Measure Your Foot for the Right Fit
Measuring your foot length is the single best way to choose the right size and avoid returns. Do it in the late afternoon, when feet are at their largest.
- Place a sheet of paper against a wall and stand on it with your heel touching the wall.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe, then measure from the wall edge to that mark in centimetres.
- Measure both feet and use the larger one, since most people have one slightly bigger foot.
- Add about 0.5 to 1 cm of toe room for comfort and movement.
Practical fitting tips:
- Measure width too if you have wide or narrow feet, since length alone does not guarantee a good fit.
- Wear the socks you intend to use with the shoes when measuring or trying on.
- For half sizes, size up rather than down if you fall in between.
- Remember that boots, heels and athletic shoes from the same brand can fit differently.
By starting from your foot length in centimetres and using the charts as a guide, you can shop US, UK and EU shoe brands with much greater confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
For men, EU size is roughly the US size plus 33, so US 9 is about EU 42-43. For women, EU size is about the US size plus 30 to 31, so US 8 is around EU 38-39. Charts vary slightly by brand.
No. For adults, US sizes run about one full size larger than UK sizes. A US Men's 10 is roughly a UK 9, and a US Women's 8 is about a UK 6.
Measure your foot length in centimetres by tracing it against a wall, then match that length to the size chart. Foot length is more reliable than guessing your usual number, especially across brands and regions.
Shoe sizing is not standardised, and each brand builds shoes on its own last shape and volume. Dress shoes, sneakers and boots can all fit differently even at the same labelled size, so check the brand's own guidance.
Aim for about 0.5 to 1 cm, roughly a thumb's width, between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This allows your foot to move and prevents pressure on your toes when walking.
The numbers differ. A women's US size is generally about 1.5 sizes larger than the equivalent men's size for the same foot length, so a women's 9.5 is roughly a men's 8. EU sizing is closer to unisex.
